VerifyIt! Promotes Civics, Voting, & Media Literacy

Learn how to spot misinformation and boost your civic literacy with VerifyIt!—our interactive online game that makes learning about media, elections, and democracy fun and empowering. Watch a short PSA on VertifyIt! here.

Why Civics, Voting, & Media Literacy Are Important

Our democracy depends on active participation by well-informed citizens.

A solid understanding of civics should inform us about the rights and responsibilities of citizens, and the roles and functions of government. Important and accurate voting information empowers us to have a voice and demand good governance from our elected representatives, claim, defend, and responsibly use our democratic rights, and protect and support our democracy. Media literacy can help defeat the cognitive biases that we all have, which make us vulnerable to false information.

That’s why we developed VerifyIt! – the game that will clarify your rights as a citizen, answer your voting questions, and challenge the persistent misinformation and disinformation claims that we see every day. We are all susceptible to believing misinformation or disinformation, and we must all become informed citizens to exercise our vote and to protect our democracy.

About the VerifyIt! Game

Verifyit! was designed to tackle the challenges youth, and indeed all of us, face today:

  • Navigating online misinformation,

  • Exercising our voting rights, and

  • Understanding our civic responsibilities.

Did you know?

  • Most democracies have the right to vote enshrined in their Constitutions - we don't!

  • The Romans started one of the earliest disinformation campaigns – it’s not new.

  • Many of the Founding Fathers were skeptical about the intelligence and political abilities of the American public – do you agree?

You can find these and over 800 other interesting facts in VerifyIt! – our free educational, non-partisan, online quiz game. And in keeping with our mission to empower voters and defend democracy, the Youth Outreach Services Committee developed VerifyIt! to reach voters and future voters where they spend most of their time—online. VerifyIt! can be played:  1. On multiple devices (mobile phones, laptops, desktop computers).  2. In or outside of the classroom. 3. In either single or multiplayer mode. There are 45 different game choices and a variety of topics that address racial justice, gender equality, climate change, redistricting, voting and political history. All questions have been researched and sourced with assistance from our partners in the areas of constitutional law, money and politics and voter education. We invite you to: 1. Challenge your news literacy skills and your civics and voting knowledge!  2. Become a more informed and engaged citizen!  3. Play VerifyIt! today!
