Election Forums
Every election season we, the LWV of Alameda, conduct forums so voters get objective information on ballot measures and hear from candidates for office. To do so, we often co-sponsor events with other local Leagues, like the LWV of Oakland, LWV of Piedmont, and LWV of Berkeley Albany Emeryville.
Forums on the ballot issues always include handouts offering a brief overview of each proposition or measure and a summary of the major “pros and cons.”
Alamedans look forward to these forums as a valuable source of carefully researched and unbiased information about important policy issues. See our YouTube channel for videos of past Alameda election forums.

Community Forums
We organize a number of community forums every year on special topics as part of our voter education and advocacy activities. These include panel presentations (always with a lively Q&A) on national and local issues. Recently, we have sponsored community forums on housing, climate change, gun safety, immigration, money in politics, gun safety, etc.
We often co-sponsor film showings and panel presentations events with other like-minded organizations such as Girls Inc. of the Island City, AAUW Alameda, Alameda Library, College of Alameda, and National Coalition of 100 Black Women.

First Friday Social
On the first Friday of almost every month, we have coordinated a no-host dinner at a different Alameda restaurant. Venues are listed on our calendar with a note about RSVPs. Usually about ten to twenty adventurers gather for drinks at 5:30pm and dinner at 6:00pm. This is a fun way to experience Alameda’s varied cuisine and to enjoy good conversation with League members and guests. Everyone in the community is welcome to join in.
Monthly Book Club
We met on the first Monday of the month at 7pm (either in person or via Zoom). We read non-fiction books, preferably paperbacks, chosen by the group upon the recommendation of one of us who has read the book. Ideally, we like to read new titles OR books published in the last two years that help us gain new insights into current events, political topics, or societal issues. Discussion is lively, interesting, and challenging. Anyone who has read the book and wants to join us is invited to attend. Our book club is now open to members of the public.
Fundraising Events
The pandemic as well as other organizational changes caused us to re-think our annual fundraiser called “Meet Your Public Officials” (MYPO). This event offered food, wine, a raffle and silent auction, and abundant opportunities to meet the folks in our community and talk to Alameda’s elected and appointed officials.
In lieu of the annual fundraiser, we are committed to continue providing opportunities to attend our candidate debates and information forums to learn about issues of importance to our community. And we ask that you consider making a one-time or monthly donation to support the work of our volunteer led organization or join us and add your voice to the issues that are important to you.

Voter Registration
We host voter registration drives on National Voter Registration Day each September at various locales in Alameda. We also hold voter registration drives at many Alameda community events.
