Purpose of Verify It!
Why Civics, Voting, & Media Literacy are Important
Our democracy depends on active participation by well-informed citizens.
A solid understanding of civics should inform us about the rights and responsibilities of citizens, and the roles and functions of government. Important and accurate voting information empowers us to have a voice and demand good governance from our elected representatives, claim, defend, and responsibly use our democratic rights, and protect and support our democracy. Media literacy can help defeat the cognitive biases that we all have, which make us vulnerable to false information.
That’s why the LWV of Alameda developed VerifyIt! – the game that will clarify your rights as a citizen, answer your voting questions, and challenge the persistent misinformation and disinformation claims that we see every day. We are all susceptible to believing misinformation or disinformation, and we must all become informed citizens to exercise our vote and to protect our democracy.
